There are some days that you just want to bleep out and start over. If something can go wrong, it will. Bill Dance, one of the country’s longest enduring celebrity anglers and TV host of Bill Dance Outdoors, knows that better than most, and puts it all on the line this month in a new campaign for Stren® fishing lines.
Conceived and produced by Minneapolis based Kerker, each of the :15 second spots gets right to the point. Just the titles themselves, “Battery”, “Stump”, “Dog” and “Launch”, are testament to the endless number of things that can befall any enthusiast angler on any given day. Each spot is focused on the fact that “some days there is only one thing you can count on;” the dependability and quality of Stren® fishing lines. Three of spots are cut from outtakes of the popular Bill Dance Outdoors TV fishing show, with a similar blooper taken from Joe Bucher’s Fishing With Joe Bucher.
In “Battery”, Bill loads a cooler and a battery onto a fishing boat piloted by a fellow angler. After loading the cooler, he turns to grab the battery, not seeing the boat drift forward, then loses his balance and falls from the dock. He’s in the water again in “Stump”, poised on the front of the boat and ready to tie off or drag it in to shore, when he notices a submerged stump. He warns the boat’s pilot who throws the boat into reverse, pitching Bill into the water. In “Dog”, we see Joe Bucher in mid-reel, bringing in a catch, when his dog leaps overboard to grab the fish and the line. Lastly, “Launch” features Bill in a motorboat being backed into the water by a colleague in a pickup. They forget to loosen the tie-downs and the boat goes down with the trailer.
“Guys who fish day in day out are going to recognize a lot of themselves in these spots,” says Chris Preston, Executive Creative Director. “They know exactly how demanding a sport angling is, and how many little things can go wrong. They love seeing them too, as long as they are happening to someone else.”
The four spots will air simultaneously on Versus, formerly the Outdoor Living Network, where Bill Dance Outdoors also attracts a massive audience of enthusiast anglers five days a week. “Dog” featuring Joe Bucher will air on The Sportsman Channel, during Fox Sport’s Southwest Fishing Report and ESPN2.
“Bill’s a great sport to show a side of his professionalism that most viewers of his show don’t see.” Preston says, “It’s that kind of willingness to roll with the punches that makes angling so incredibly popular as a sport and these spots appealing to viewers.”
